TEMPE, Ariz. (FOX 10) - Tempe Fire says a fire broke out at a popular sports bar and restaurant near Rural and Baseline Roads.
Officials say crews responded to heavy fire conditions at Doc and Eddy's Bar and Restaurant early Sunday morning. Multiple fire crews rushed to the scene - Guadalupe, Chandler, Mesa, Phoenix, and Gilbert fire crews helped Tempe firefighters battle the fire. The fire was put out, but there is extensive damage to the building.
"The fire was traveling through the building and we did have at least three aerial ladders in the air, spraying water into the building," said Brandon Siebert, with the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department.
Tempe Fire says the building did not have a sprinkler system due to the time it was built and the fire code it was built under, but if sprinklers had been present, the fire damage would have been significantly less.
Fire crews tell us three employees were inside the building when it caught fire and thankfully they escaped in time with no injuries.
Now, what's left of a popping spot known for its karaoke and team trivia nights is left in ashes and the heavy hearts of those who stopped in regularly.
"It's surreal," said Chaise Johnson, who lives near Doc and Eddy's. "You don't expect it's going to happen to some place that you go to."
"It's a loss because people come from a ways away to go to this place so it's really too bad," said William Schedi, who lives near Doc and Eddy's.
Sunday morning came as a total shock as neighbors watched their favorite Tempe sports bar up in flames.
"We've lived in Tempe for almost 12 years and it's always been here," Schedi said. "It's always a busy place to go and people love it and it's really a shame that this has happened."
"It was crazy insane," said Marie Lemme, who witnessed the fire. "I was walking the dog when it went down and I was like, 'Oh, my God.'"
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire officials suspect the building is a total loss.
