Fire crews deliver baby in moving ambulance

BUCKEYE VALLEY, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Giving birth in a moving vehicle was not one woman's choice of a delivery room, but in this case, it was an ambulance with the Buckeye Valley Fire Department.

Crews often transport women in labor to the hospital for delivery and make it in plenty of time. March 31, was not a usual call, and some babies are born on their own schedule.

The arrival of baby Kaycee was a tad bumpy.

"I was scared, but I just knew she was coming, and there was no stopping. My plan was to get the epidural and everything, but things did not work out as planned," said Kelsey Savory.

While at her mother's house in Buckeye Valley, 20-year-old Kelsey Savory started having labor pains, but since she had already been to the hospital and been sent home, she waited.

"I was very scared, I was going to be delivering my grandbaby on my bathroom floor," said Candice Hamilton.

Hamilton, who is Kelsey's grandmother, called 9-1-1 before 8 a.m. and Station 326 crews responded.

"I felt her coming, and my whole body just started pushing on its own," said Kelsey.

Firefighters delivered 5 pound, 2-ounce baby Kaycee in their ambulance on the way to West Valley Hospital.

"She did all the work, I just caught the baby, made sure she was safe, cut the cord and gave her to mom," said Firefighter Joe.

Kaycee arrived healthy and crying somewhere around SR85 and Jackrabbit Road. On Monday, the crews presented a gift basket to the new family.

"These guys were like my heroes," said Kelsey.
