Fire damages west valley home

- It's a horrible way to end any year; fire gutted a west valley home.

Now the woman who spotted the flames, and tried to make sure nobody was inside, is speaking out.

Smoke streamed out of the roof of the home near 59th Avenue and Osborn overnight. Firefighters knocked down the blaze before it could spread to neighboring homes. The quick response is thanks to a woman who was passing by.

"We were passing by and saw smoke, we thought something and joined people who went the house, and we were banging on the door and on the wall," said Lourdes Aguirre.

Nobody was inside, they called 9-1-1, and firefighters say they are grateful for the help.

"I mean the citizens are our initial contact, we don't know until we get the call, she obviously had a lot to do with a successful outcome regarding nobody being hurt, nobody being inside. I can't say enough about the support she provided," said Captain Larry Subervi.

There were no injuries to firefighters; that is the good news. The bad news is there is a lot of damage done to this house.

Fire investigators are working to determine how the blaze started.
