Flagstaff Police: 21-year-old man found dead in Rio De Flag

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (KSAZ) -- Flagstaff Police officials say they are investigating the death of a man who was found in the Rio De Flag canal on Monday.

According to a statement release by Sgt. Cory Runge with Flagstaff Police Department, the man, identified as 21-year-old Kain Turner, was found in the Rio De Flag near 2 S. Beaver Street by a concerned citizen Monday morning. The Cottonwood man attended Northern Arizona University, and lived on campus.

The Coconino County Medical Examiner's Officer is investigating the cause of death, but Flagstaff Police officials said an initial investigation did not indicate any signs of foul play. An investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, officials with the Phi Gamma Delta International Fraternity said Tuesday that Kain was one of their members. Its Executive Director, Bill martin, released the following the statement:

"The members and leadership of Phi Gamma Delta extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Kain Turner, our undergraduate brother from Northern Arizona University who died recently. Our thoughts are with all those who have been touched by this tragic loss. We appreciate especially the support provided to our undergraduate brothers by staff and others of the NAU community."

Kain's father, Keith Turner, is remembering his son.

"He was a black belt in karate. He taught other kids in karate. He never met anyone that didn't like him. He was a leader. He was an A and B student," said Turner in a phone interview.

On Thursday, Turner talked to his son to wish him a happy 21st birthday.

"I called him on my way home from work and talked to him, and put my mother on the phone with a three-way, so we had a conference call with my mother and my son, and he was good," said Turner.

Turner said what he know is what Kain was kicked out of a bar in Downtown Flagstaff at around 1:00 a.m. Sunday, and the last communication Kain had with anyone was with his friend in Virginia.

Turner, meanwhile, is still hoping for more answers.

"Was it that he just got drunk and passed out somewhere and nobody knew it, or did someone else have a hand in it?" said Turner. "Did some Uber driver kick him out in the middle of nowhere and he froze to death?"

Turner said Kain's body will be flown back to Virginia for burial.
