Ford Cobra Jet Mustang up for auction at Barrett-Jackson

GLENDALE, Ariz. (FOX 10) - This 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet is just one of 68 ever made.

"The horsepower is unspecified," said Mark Witthar, general manager of Sanderson Ford. "We don't know how fast it is. We do know it'll run a quarter-mile in about eight seconds!"

The specially-made 50th anniversary Mustang will go to the highest bidder on January 19 at Barrett-Jackson.

"All hand-built suspension, all hand-built motor, and like I said there's only 68, so some lucky person is going to get one of 68 of these cars," Whitthar said.

All of the auction's proceeds will benefit the Fighter Country Foundation, which supports the men and women of Luke Air Force Base.

"Some of their facilities look like a 1910 Greyhound bus station," said David Kimmerele of Luke Air Force Base. "Everything that we do is to make their lives better as they serve us, so we can have the freedoms that we have."

The foundation's goal is to raise as much money as they can, hoping the proceeds will provide the assistance the base needs that the government does not provide.

"We're hoping for over $200,000 for this car, it depends on there's only 68 of these cars," Kimmerele said.

While the auction is for a great cause, it's also a good time.

"Everything that this car does is for a collector or for someone that really wants to go out on the strip and ride off on the showroom floor and set records," Kimmerele said. "You can do that in this car."
