FOX 10 gets behind-the-scenes look at 911 dispatchers

Emergency dispatchers, also know as unseen heroes, are being recognized this week for their service.

FOX 10 got a behind-the-scenes look at what Phoenix Police Department 911 dispatchers experience while on the job, day in and day out.

No matter how serious, or life-threatening, this dispatch center is filled with calming voices on the other end of the line.

"It is pretty stressful," Jake Thompson said. "A lot of critical incidents that do happen here in the city, so we do take it all."

But these heroes with headsets work together to help others through their toughest times.

"We have dispatchers that work the emergency calls and it's important for us to be on the same page and to work together because if we need help from each other, we're always there for each other," Thompson said.

"They are actually coming in on the calls with us, you know, and that's why we call them our 'unseen heroes,'" said Sgt. Alan Pfohl with Phoenix police. "You know, we show up and you see the uniform, but they are with us every step of the way, and really our telecommunicators are just invaluable for us."

The entire Phoenix 911 operations center was lit in gold as a thank you to those men and women serving the Phoenix community.
