PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Maricopa County Animal Care and Control is holding an event, "Empty the Shelters," at both east and west shelters.
This means both dogs and cats are free. Adoptions will include vaccination, alteration surgery and license. The organization #LovePup is sponsoring microchips for all adopted dogs.
Collars and leashes will be given to adopters while supplies last.
Jose Miguel Santiago with MCACC says these adoptions save people anywhere from $17 to $150 depending on the animal being adopted. The microchip sponsorship is a savings of $25 per adopted animal.
As of Saturday morning, Santiago said that the shelters had almost 800 dogs.
The goal of MCACC is to empty as many kennels as possible to make space for homeless animals in the area.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
