Woman convicted of felony child abuse after kids left in car

PHOENIX (AP) -- A woman who left her two young sons unattended in a hot car while she went shopping in Mesa has been found guilty of felony child abuse.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 30-year-old Amanda Hope Gomez-Vidal will be sentenced Nov. 18.

Mesa police went to a Party City store on Aug. 13, 2014 after a passer-by noticed two children alone in a van in the parking lot with the windows rolled up.

Both boys-- ages 9 months and 23 months -- reportedly were sweating profusely in 94-degree weather.

Police were about to break a window on the van when Gomez-Vidal approached and said she was in the store for only five minutes.

They say store surveillance video showed Gomez-Vidal was inside the store for 22 minutes and she was arrested.
