Gun found in North Canyon High School student's backpack

PHOENIX - Phoenix Police were contacted Wednesday after North Canyon High School officials notified them about a student who possibly had a weapon.
When officers arrived at the scene near Union Hills Drive and 16th Street, they contacted a 15-year-old student. After further investigation, a handgun was found in a backpack.
"The incident is under investigation and a student has been detained for questioning," stated Phoebe Volk of the Phoenix Police Department.
The school was placed on lockdown for about 10 minutes while the student was apprehended and placed in police custody.

At Paradise Valley Unified School District (PVSchools), our first priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff. We take all incidents and any reported allegations seriously and work in cooperation with law enforcement on all police matters.
First and foremost, we want to let you know that our students and staff members on the North Canyon High School campus are safe.
Earlier this afternoon, it was brought to the attention of school administrators that a student on campus had a handgun in possession. We immediately called 911, and Phoenix Police Department arrived on scene. The school was briefly placed in a lockdown for approximately 10 minutes. The student in question was apprehended and has been placed in police custody.
At PVSchools, students are held accountable for their actions as outlined in the Parent/Student Handbook. If a student is found to be in violation of a policy, the student is disciplined accordingly. Due to the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), PVSchools cannot provide any details about the student in question, including the disciplinary action(s) that will be taken.
In closing, PVSchools and North Canyon High School is cooperating fully with the Phoenix Police Department on the investigation and will provide the police with any support requested. As this is an ongoing police investigation, any additional questions you may have about the case should be referred to the Phoenix Police Department.
Incident on North Canyon campus has been resolved with no danger to staff or students. Message will be sent to parents shortly.
