Higley Unified School Board votes to uphold principal's resignation

Students at an East Valley High School stage a walk out as a show of support for a principal who suddenly resigned.
The walk-out did not last long. The school board is taking action on the resignation Friday night.
When students got the news, the reaction came quickly. Many students feared the principal may have been forced out and by mid-morning they left their classrooms in protest.
Hundreds of students walked out of class, protesting in the center of Williams Field's campus, upset over the sudden resignation of the school's beloved principal.
"A lot of people are really angry and i don't this is going to stop until the district hears us and the district makes a change," said student, Brintley Kons.
The students say they got the word today that Principal Terri Wattawa submitted her resignation today and while rumors are spreading, the students say they were not given an official explanation.
"People are mad but they are frustrated too because they know the kind of person she is and that she stands up for what is right," said another student, Abigail Skousen.
The walkout was quickly organized via a text message sent out by senior, Jared Mulqueen.
"400 kids get the message at the same time and told them wait until this time and I said go and like everyone in my class and there was like 600 kids," said Mulqueen.
The students say teachers did not stand in the way.
"We all just decided to it. It was all or nothing everyone had to do it or it just wasn't going to work," said student, Kilynn Lawrence.
The district is not saying much about the principal's resignation only that students respectfully returned to their classrooms. Based upon the students' statements, it appears they are aware that the board is going to be taking action Friday night on the principal's letter of resignation.
After this huge show of support, parents and students hope to get an explanation.
"I think it is a great lesson for these teenagers that their message can be heard through peace without riot without contention," said a parent, Janae Heath.
"I feel it was a good way to show our love to Doctor Wattawa and how much we support her and need her and don't want her to leave," said student, Hayden Heath.
The Higley School Board is expected to address the principal's resignation Friday night.
Despite repeated phone calls and emails, FOX 10 was not able to get an explanation from the district.
