Hit and run mystery: Family, friends look for answers after man was killed

Police are searching for the driver of a car who hit and killed a man last week in Scottsdale and then left the scene.

Authorities say the 22-year-old victim had been lying in the street at the time of the collision, but those close to him have no idea why that would be the case.

Why was Westin L'Heureux lying in the road late at night? That's a question his friends are grappling with and the answer is still a mystery. Meanwhile, the Scottsdale Police Department is hoping the driver of the car that hit him will come forward.

"It's surreal.. it's weird.. I was just with him," said Isla Bonifield. She is still trying to come to terms after losing her best friend. She was with him just a few hours before he died on November 29th.

"We walked around the neighborhood and he was kind of tired of walking so we sat down right here and we just talked about life," she said.

Bonifield says after their talk, he went to visit another friend.

Scottsdale police say L'Heureux was hit by a car near Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard. He was rushed to an area hospital, but later died from his injuries.

"I went to bed. I didn't have a text back from him and I just had this feeling as soon as I didn't see anything.

Police say he was lying in the street when he was hit. The driver never stopped, but police say the driver may not have even known they hit someone. The scenario doesn't sit well with L'Heureux's friends.

"They keep saying they think he laid down in the street and that just doesn't make sense to me because he wouldn't do that. He wouldn't do something like that," said Bonifield.

Police are hoping the driver of the car comes forward to help them figure out what happened. In the meantime, friends and family are holding on to the memories they have of him.

"He was genuine.. there's no one like him out there," said Bonifield.
