Secretary of State race in Arizona is now too close to call

PHOENIX (KSAZ/AP) -- New numbers made available by the Arizona Secretary of State's office shows Democratic candidate Katie Hobbs in the lead, as ballots continue to be counted in the race to become the state's next Secretary of State.

As of 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Hobbs received 1,083,210 votes (50.10%), while Republican Party candidate Steve Gaynor received 1,077,543 votes (49.90%). This means Hobbs is now ahead by 5,667 votes.

The incumbent Secretary of State, Michele Reagan, was defeated in the GOP primary by Steve Gaynor. The Associated Press projected Gaynor to win the race on Election Day, but Hobbs criticized AP's decision to call the race.

"The Associated Press has incorrectly called the Secretary of State race in Arizona with a razor-thin margin and hundreds of thousands of ballots remaining to be counted," said Niles Harris, Hobbs' campaign manager, on the night of the election.

On Monday, November 12, Associated Press retracted its projection, and said the wire service will not make a projection until results are certified by officials.
