Hoffman maintains lead in State Superintendent race

PHOENIX (AP/KSAZ) -- New voting numbers from the Arizona Secretary of State's office show Democratic Party candidate Kathy Hoffman is maintaining her lead in the race to replace Diane Douglas as the state's next Superintendent for Public Instruction.

As of 5:10 p.m. on Tuesday, Hoffman received 1,101,683 votes (51.30%), while GOP candidate Frank Riggs received 1,047,561 votes (48.70%). This means Hoffman is ahead by 54,122 votes.

On Monday, the Associated Press projected that Democratic candidate Kathy Hoffman will win the race, defeating Republican candidate Frank Riggs.

The incumbent Superintendent of Public Instruction, Diane Douglas, was defeated in the GOP primary by Riggs.

Hoffman was one of hundreds of current and former educator-activists on general election ballots across the country following this year's #RedForED protests.

On an unverified Facebook page that purportedly belongs to Riggs, the GOP candidate congratulated Hoffman and other "successful Democratic candidates" on Tuesday, while blaming an out-of-state person for trying to influence election results in Arizona.

Riggs went on to say that he is proud of the campaign he has run, and thanked his supporters.
