Hundreds of Arizona students get chance to see 'Hamilton'

Students from 38 schools lined up outside and once inside ASU Gammage, 20 students from 14 schools took the stage to perform their version of Hamilton.

After they wowed a crowd of their peers, they watched the hit show.

"They also had the opportunity to study the curriculum, learn about the time period, build their own creative programs, which they will present to the cast," Colleen Jennings said.

The students spent weeks in their classrooms studying American history. Then, they submitted original works, like poems, rap, songs, and monologues.

"We had to make this presentation thing in the form of a poem or song, I happened to do a poem one," one student said.

Hamilton is now in its final weekend at ASU and for a lot of these students, seeing the show is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"I thought it was a really cool idea cause, well, it's a play in the modern era," one student said. "I think that was really interesting because the thing that I was more interested about is that they were outreaching us, outreaching to the high schools, 'hey, this is good history, do you want to learn it?'"

"For many of these students, this could be their only theatre experience," Jennings said. "You can imagine your only theatre experience is Hamilton, the hottest ticket on the planet. They're having an opportunity to combine academics with this great musical."
