NOGALES, Ariz. (FOX 10) -- Federal officials say an illicit cross-border tunnel was found Monday by Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents and Mexican law enforcement officials.
According to a statement released Tuesday, the tunnel, still under construction, was discovered during a routine bi-national sweep. The entry point was found, submerged, along the international waterway channel built below the cities of Nogales, and the tunnel came to an abrupt shop underneath a parking lot in Nogales, Ariz.
The tunnel, according to officials, was approximately 50 feet in length, and extended 44 feet into United States territory. Inside the two feet wide by two feet tall tunnel, agents found structural shoring and digging tools, indicating that excavation is still in progress. Agents will monitor and inspect the tunnel until it is properly secured, and remediated with concrete filler.
