Lake Havasu City man helped evacuate homeless people from fire at Body beach

A massive brush fire engulfed Body Beach in Lake Havasu City Saturday night

As the fire was raging, witnesses were recording.

Chad Vrieling shot cell phone video of the fire. He said it was just around 10:30 p.m. when the massive plume of smoke and flames caught his attention.

"I'm riding at the skate park and then I look over and then I see fire over at the beach. And so my first instinct is, I go over there and investigate and see what's going on," Vrieling said.

Vrieling says he hopped in his truck knowing there were a dozen or so homeless camps in that area.

"It was roughly 20 to 30 feet high. It was pretty big, it was moving quickly. By the time I got everyone out, it had consumed all of the campsites," Vrieling said.

According to Vrieling, crews from the Lake Havasu City Fire Department, Oatman Fire District and Desert Hills Fire Department spent at least a few hours battling the blaze.

Vrieling says he helped evacuate as many as six people while his friends helped even more people to safety.

"It was horrifying. There was a big fire coming my way, but I always try to help people out, I always make sure that people are safe. I like to help out those that are in need, the people that had their shelters right there were in need of it most," Vrieling said.
