Major changes coming to Scottsdale Fashion Square

Big changes coming to Scottsdale Fashion Square.

At a time when some malls are struggling, the big mall in the heart of Scottsdale is investing in the future with a massive redevelopment.

"It's really a focus in this Neiman Marcus - Dillard's corridor," said Kim Choukalas, Vice President of Leasing at Scottsdale Fashion Square. "You're going to see new lighting, new tile, paint, really bringing the center up to trend, and complimenting the luxury dealers we have today."

Interior work on the major renovation will start in August. The multi dimensional, multimillion dollar renovation will include major changes to the inside and the outside, and will also include new restaurants and residential space.

"All the walls, all the materials, all the floors, all the lighting will be all brand new," said Scott Nelson, Senior Vice President of Real Estate at Scottsdale Fashion Square. "We're going to turn it into a grand sense of arrival. Almost as if you're approaching a resort."

Macerich, which owns the mall, hasn't disclosed the cost of the overhaul. Choukalas, however, said it's "substantial", and will be a "game changer". Some are wondering why the mall is expanding when many are closing across the country. Choukalas said Scottsdale Fashion Square has been lucky, and the renovation is needed for evolution and growth.

"People come from all over the world to shop with us," said Choukalas. "International and domestic visitors. We have great activities that take place in Phoenix like Barrett Jackson, the Phoenix Open. So we have events that bring customers."

Construction is set to wrap up in the Fall of 2018.
