Man arrested in connection with 1981 cold case murder of teenage girl

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -- Officials with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday afternoon the arrest of a man, in connection with the murder of a 13-year-old girl in 1981.

According to the statement, new DNA evidence from the case linked the murder of Amy Yachimec to Raymond Diaz, who is serving a lengthy sentence in state prison after convictions for kidnapping, sexual assault, and other crimes.

Yachimec, according to the statement, went missing from her family's apartment in the 3500 block of W. Van Buren Street on November 6, 1981. Diaz was considered a person of interest in the missing person investigation at the time, but there was not enough evidence for the arrest. MCSO assumed the case in 1988, after new evidence led detectives to believe that Yachimec was murdered in MCSO's jurisdiction.

Diaz, officials say, was linked to Yachimec's murder in March of 2015. He was arrested last week, and has since been booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on a count of First Degree Murder.
