Man charged with manslaughter after fatal street-racing crash in Phoenix

A 24-year-old man is being accused of reckless manslaughter after being involved in a street-racing crash that killed another man Saturday morning, police say.

Jario Pedregon and 21-year-old Armando Acosta were speed racing on McDowell Road towards 67th Avenue when they "made contact with each other" and lost control of their cars, according to Sgt. Tommy Thompson from Phoenix Police.

Acosta crashed into a pole, causing a power outage. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Thompson says.

Pedregon was not hurt, but police say he appeared to be impaired. He has been booked into Maricopa County Jail.

According to the police report, Pedregon admitted to having 23 shots of tequila leading up to the accident.
