TEMPE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - As investigators determine if the body found in Flagstaff is of Cathryn Gorospe, more information is surfacing about Charlie Malzahn, the last person who was seen with Gorospe.
On the night of October 8th, 2017, Malzahn allegedly physically assaulted a 17-year-old ASU student in her dorm room on the Tempe campus.
According to police, Malzahn said he was thirsty and asked for a bottle of water from the victim. The victim gave him one, and then asked him to leave repeatedly.
Malzahn refused to do so, and grew angry, eventually punching her in the face multiple times.
Police say the victim then began to scream. Malzahn responded by throwing her on the ground and covering her mouth with his hand.
On October 1 while in the 4th Avenue Jail, Malzahn confessed to officers he was on meth and had been awake for three days, thus he didn't remember much of anything that had happened.
He also confessed to assaulting the student, and to matching the same clothing as the person who was captured on the dorm's surveillance video.
Malzahn was the last person seen with Cathryn Gorospe before she disappeared a week ago.
Malzahn, 27, was bonded out of the Coconino County Jail by Gorospe on Friday, October 6, 2017 at 10:12 p.m. According to police, he was booked into jail on August 20 by Williams police for alleged theft of means of transportation, in addition to other alleged weapons-related charges.
It is believed the two left Flagstaff traveling west, likely via I-40 toward Williams. Police said ultimately, it is unknown how long the two were together, but police said it is believed that Malzahn took the car from Gorospe, at some point.
According to police, investigators feel Malzahn traveled from Flagstaff through Williams, Chino Valley, Prescott, Prescott Valley to I-17, and then through Phoenix to the town of Clifton.
Tucson Police said Malzahn tried to buy items at the mall, with Gorospe's credit and debit cards on Saturday, October 7, and he may have been driving her SUV. The vehicle was spotted early Monday, October 9, in Phoenix and Malzahn was arrested after he crashed the SUV following a police pursuit.
Between these two days is when Malzahn assaulted the ASU student.
