$2,500 reward offered in Mesa hit-and-run case

- There are new developments surrounding a deadly hit and run crash in Mesa.

A young man was left to die on the side of a street after he was hit by a car.  The driver never stopped to help. Now his family is hoping the public can help bring their loved one justice.

The deadly crash happened just over a week ago on March 6th near Alma School and University Drive.

Police released surveillance video of the car involved in the crash -- a white Volvo station wagon. They hope someone can tip them off to where it and the driver might be located.

"He had went to the store and was walking home, he would've made it," said the victim's sister Joshawna Hawkins.

Her brother, 28-year-old William Hawkins, Jr. was about a block away from his home when his life was cut short by the hit and run driver.

Police believe the person behind the wheel of a 1990s model Volvo veered into the bicycle lane, slammed into Hawkins, killing him.

"I don't know why they hadn't stopped. I wish they did. Maybe my brother would still be here if they had stopped and helped," said Joshawna.

Family members say William was walking west on University against the flow of traffic, so the Volvo would have damage to its right front passenger side or even the windshield.

Police say the driver kept going east on University. The car was last seen on surveillance video near University and Extension. Officials say the car is unique enough that someone out there may easily remember seeing it.

There is a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case.

Flowers mark the spot where William was left to die. As his family prepares for his funeral, they're pleading for the public's help in finding the driver.

"His dreams, his possibilities.. all cut short because of a reckless thing that had happened to him," said Joshawna. "We know we forgive the person that did it. We just want the justice my brother deserves."

Anyone with information is asked to call Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS.
