MESA, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Mesa Police officials say they are at the scene of an officer involved shooting Wednesday afternoon.
According to a tweet made on the police's Twitter page, the incident took place on the northeast corner of Greenfield and Baseline, and all police officers are OK.
The scene, as of Wednesday evening, is still active, with undercover officers casing the scene. According to a statement by Mesa Police, the shooting involves a known man who is being investigated for an alleged Order of Protection violation that happened on Tuesday. The suspect, according to the statement, contacted his estranged wife, and made certain demands stating he would shoot everyone, including the police, if his demands were not met.
Officers, according to the statement, confirmed the man recently bought a weapon, and developed probable cause to charge him with the alleged protection order violation. Undercover officers were doing surveillance, and reportedly made contact with him at the scene, while he was alone.
According to the statement, witnesses at the scene state that during the contact, the suspect drew a weapon and fired at the officers. One officer then returned fire, striking the suspect.
The suspect, according to police, is in the hospital in serious condition.
