Mesa police investigating officer-involved crash

The major intersection of Dobson and Southern in Mesa was shut down for hours Tuesday morning at the height of rush hour after a bad crash involving a Mesa police SUV and silver Honda.

"Officers running code three with lights and sirens and just trying to get there quickly," Sgt. Efren Carmona said.

Mesa police says the officer was responding to a fire call at around 4:40 a.m.

"From the information we gathered, the officer was traveling northbound on Dobson, he did have the red light and made impact with a vehicle," Carmona said.

Luckily, the officer and the woman in the Honda weren't badly hurt, despite the violent collision. The case will be under investigation, which is standard when there's an accident involving a law enforcement officer.

The intersection fully reopened about four hours later.

"Luckily on this collision, it seems like everyone will be OK, just a little bit shaken up at this time," Carmona said.
