Mesa woman's dog shot by SWAT team

- A Mesa family is demanding answers from authorities after their dog was injured during a police operation last week.

The dog was in it's own backyard when officers rushed in looking for a suspect, they ended up shooting it with a less-lethal round. The owner said police never told them they shot the animal and the wound could have been deadly.

The owner told me that her dog Roxy's injuries were so severe, the veterinarian didn't know if the she would survive. Mesa Police SWAT officers shot Roxy with a bean bag that punctured her lung. Roxy's owner says officers left her pet for dead, and wants to know why they shot her dog in the first place.

Seven-year-old Roxy is at home recovering after officers shot her in the chest last Wednesday. Stephanie Martin says Roxy was found bleeding in the yard and was rushed to a vet.

"He felt something funny and he gave it a little tug, and it wasn't coming out," said Stephani Martin.

An X-ray showed that this beanbag round fired by an officer was lodged in Roxy's chest cavity, puncturing her left lung. Stepani's other dog Piggie was also hit three times, but not seriously injured.

"Who could do something like that to a dog, they basically left her for dead," said Martin.

The day Roxy was shot, officers were pursuing a suicidal teen who said he'd been bitten by a dog.
"They were looking in backyards and they ended up in our backyard and shot two dogs," said Martin.

Mesa Police tell us Stephani's dogs were agitated and rushed the SWAT team. That's when they shot the dogs with beanbags and left to continue their search.

"Apparently it's part of the policies and procedures to notify a homeowner when something like this happens, but it wasn't done," said Martin.

Stepani says police never explained what happened until her dad contacted them. The entire family is still angry and baffled.

"I don't get how people don't have heart enough to do that to a dog and leave them there," said Martin.
