Motorcyclist killed, DPS trooper hurt in freeway crashes

- Part of the I-17 freeway was shut down at Bell Road overnight because of a deadly crash, and a DPS trooper was injured while responding to the collision.

DPS troopers say five vehicles, including a motorcycle, were involved in a series of crashes on the freeway.  One of the vehicles was rear-ended by the motorcycle and then left the scene.

The driver of the motorcycle, a man in his 50s, died on the scene.  Both lanes of I-17 were shut down while troopers investigated the deadly collision.  Troopers are trying to find the driver of a newer-model white 4-door sedan that was rear-ended by the motorcycle in the hopes of gathering more information.  DPS spokesperson Bart Graves says it's possible the driver of the white sedan was not even aware of the rear-end collision involving the cyclist.

A DPS trooper was also injured in the area of I-17 and Thunderbird while responding to the deadly crash and was taken to the hospital.  That trooper is expected to be okay, and is back at home recovering on Sunday.

DPS has not released the name of the victim killed in the crash.  The freeway was opened up again at about 5am.
