Mural dedicated to Sen. McCain coming to Old Town Scottsdale

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Many times, a masterpiece is an amazing collaboration, rather than a solo effort and that's exactly the case when it comes to "The Maverick," a commemorative mural coming to the heart of Old Town Scottsdale.

The 4,001 square-foot mural will be dedicated to Sen. John McCain and those involved say McCain was an easy choice.

"Through our process and our collab(sic) effort, we kind of just worked through some icons of Arizona and how can we relate to Arizona and the people of the community, and it seemed like Senator McCain has a grit and kind of strength that Phoenicians can relate to. so this idea came alive and we took it from there," Aaron Bass said.

The mural will be created on the north elevation fo the 4235 N. Marshall Way building and will pull from the halftone printing process used to print newspapers since the 1800s.

The concept stems from a re-imagination and interpretation of a Nigel Parry portrait of Senator McCain.

"One of the biggest aspects for us and myself is again here, you have an individual that's dedicated his life to serving the public good and that plays a huge significance in why we chose him for the subject matter," Tommy Suchart said.

Between the artist, architect, and developer, there are many ways for "The Maverick," and even though not everyone agrees when it comes to politics, the goal is to start a conversation.

"However you look at it, I think it's going to add to the texture of the neighborhood, whether it's just the aesthetic, appearance of something that's interesting, or whether it's thought provoking for the individual people, we hope that it creates a great dialogue," Eric Marvin said.
