NEW IN THE VALLEY: K-9 joins Glendale Parks and Rec's community outreach team

GLENDALE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Glendale's Parks and Recreations has a new member -- a furry member -- for its community outreach program

"Ranger" isn't the typical K9 dog in law enforcement. As a community outreach dog, he brings love and comfort to the community.

"People in today's society now in a lot of stress, a lot going on," said park ranger supervisor Chris Kurtzhals. "If we could ease that a little bit, and bring a good feeling to someone, that's exactly what we want to do."

The idea of having a community outreach chocolate lab was quickly brought up in a meeting. After some research, Kurtzhals went to Colorado to find the right pup.

"He wasn't biting back or showing any aggressiveness when it was feeding time," said Kurtzhals. "And I was, like, 'that's the dog I need, because of what we want to do with citizens.'"

Ranger is now six months old and in training, already making huge strides.

"When he gets solid on his obedience, we'll start with the therapy stuff and get him certified in that, and that may take a year or so," said Kurtzhals.

So far, Ranger has been enjoying the attention he gets from the locals. The response from the community has been nothing but positive.

"They are very loyal companions, as you can see," said Glendale resident Isaac Owens. "You got a guy over here petting him. Kids always love the animals."

Those who come across Ranger can't help but to light up, making people feel comforted and at ease.

Ranger's care, supplies, and training are only funded by donations and sponsorships.
