Passenger missing after car goes into Phoenix canal

A passenger is missing after a car drove into a canal in Phoenix on Wednesday morning.

The Phoenix Fire Department says the driver of the car fell asleep at the wheel and drove the car into a canal near 39th Avenue and Whitton.

The driver got out of the car safely, but told firefighters she did not know where her passenger was.

Firefighters used the bucket from a ladder truck to get close enough to the car to determine that no one was inside when it was in the canal.
