PHOENIX (FOX 10) - The yule log will burn low and the carols may quiet, but you also have to figure out what to do with your Christmas tree once the holiday season comes to an end.
Phoenix fire crews say it may be more dangerous to leave them up, and in just 15 seconds, a real Christmas tree can quickly become a fire hazard.
"It's when the trees start drying out that they become really dangerous," Capt. Larry Subervi said. "There's so many exposed needles that's all fuel for the fire and as soon as it lights, it's just a blowtorch inside your living room."
So how can you avoid your tree in flames?
Recycle, the fire department says. Anyone can bring their tree to the four select locations throughout the Valley and the service is free.
"So don't leave them up. Again, we don't want to ruin anyone's tradition, but if you're going to leave your tree up, you're definitely going to need to be aware and take precaution," Capt. Subervi said.
