Officer critically injured in shooting, suspect dead

Authorities say a Phoenix police officer has been seriously injured in a shooting and a suspect has been shot and killed.
The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon in the area of 51st Avenue and Baseline Road.
An ambulance rushed the officer to St Joseph's Hospital where a large gathering of police officers was observed. The officer remains in critical condition. 

Police sources say they responded to a burglary in progress call. The home owner called police and said his son was stealing firearms from the home, several officers arrived and tried to contact the suspect inside a dark colored van when he opened fire then the suspect and officers exchanged gunfire. During the gunfight the 

SkyFox video shows police surrounding a home near the shooting scene where a dark colored van has a back window shot out. A tactical team searched the vehicle and found the suspect dead.

Late Wednesday afternoon Chief Yahner gave an update; the injured officer is a 12 year veteran with the department, is 35-years-old, and has a wife and two young children.

"He is in extremely critical condition... he is fighting for his life," said Chief Joe Yahner.

Phoenix Police sent a helicopter to bring the injured family to the hospital. Over 200 officers were seen inside or outside the hospital where the officer was taken.
