Man killed, K-9 injured in officer-involved shooting in Phoenix

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -- Officers with multiple law enforcement agencies were at the scene of a deadly officer involved shooting shooting Tuesday.

According to Sgt. Armando Carbajal with Phoenix Police, the incident happened along the 2700 block of E. Valencia. Sgt. Carbajal, In another statement, Tiffany Smith with Glendale Police said their officers were working in conjunction with a U.S. Marshals Task Force when they got involved in an officer involved shooting.

In a news conference late Tuesday night, Glendale Police Sergeant John Roth said at around 5:26 p.m., officers and members of the task force in the area were looking for a wanted suspect who escaped from Department of Corrections custody since about February. The suspect fled out of the back of the residence, jumped over a back wall, and came into contact with a Glendale Police K-9 unit. The suspect fired rounds from a handgun at the officers, and the officers fired back.

Sgt. Roth said a K-9 was struck by gunfire, and was taken to a local animal hospital in stable condition. No human officers were hurt, and the suspect, identified as a 23-year-old white man, was struck multiple times, and died from his injuries. The man was not identified by Sgt. Roth as of Tuesday night.

An investigation is underway.
