Phoenix police are trying to figure out what drove a man to shoot a woman and then turn the gun on himself.
The murder-suicide occurred Sunday afternoon just before 2:00 p.m. at a home near 53rd Ave and Camelback.
Officers initially responded to the home because neighbors suspected a robbery was in progress when they witnessed several people trying to break into the home, according to Officer James Holmes with the Phoenix Police Department.
It turns out that those people were family members of the victims who were worried about their loved ones and we’re trying to get into the home to check on the couple.
When officers entered the home they found 33-year-old Jessica Rubacalba and 43-year-old Adan Chavez, both with obvious signs of trauma and both deceased, says Holmes.
Homicide detectives with the Phoenix Police Department have determined that Adan Chavez first shot Jessica Rubalcava and then himself, according to Holmes.
A weapon was found at the scene.
Family members have described Adan and Jessica as husband and wife, although an actual marriage has not been confirmed by Phoenix Police.
The couple did have children, but the children were not in the home at the time of this incident, according to Holmes.
The children are now in the care of family members.
