PHOENIX (FOX 10) -- Phoenix police say a man has died at the hospital after he was shot while chasing after a suspect who took his cellphone.
According to Sgt. Tommy Thompson, the shooting happened outside of a McDonald's on 19th Avenue and Baseline Road when 34-year-old Eric Hernandez was approached by 18-year-old Keesean Jones who asked him if he could borrow his cellphone.
When Hernandez obliged, the suspect ran away with the phone. While Hernandez was chasing him to get the phone back, the suspect turned and shot him.
Hernandez was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.
On March 14, police arrested Jones in Gilbert. He admitted to being involved in the shooting and was booked into jail on second-degree murder and theft charges.
