Police: Murder suspect injured in officer-involved shooting

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Police say a man who is a suspect in a murder is in serious condition following an officer-involved shooting in Phoenix.

Phoenix police tell Fox 10 it all began at around 7:15 a.m. on Thursday morning when officers responded to 9-1-1 calls of gunshots in a neighborhood near 35th Avenue and Roeser.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the body of 31-year-old Martin Tagaban inside a home.

Investigators say Tagaban died from an apparent gunshot wound and after talking to witnesses, Tagaban's 34-year-old friend was identified as the suspect in the murder.

Shortly after, police found the suspect near Southern and 35th Avenue, who then resisted arrested and pointed a gun at police.

Police say they had no choice but to shoot the suspect.

No officers were injured in the shooting, but Southern Avenue was shut down for several hours between 31st and 35th Avenues.

The shooting happened about a mile and a half from where Phoenix Police Officer David Glasser was shot and killed while responding to a burglary call on May 18.

"We don't want to use deadly force," Phoenix Police Chief Joseph Yahner said.

Police say many detectives involved in today's officer-involved shooting had to leave Officer Glasser's funeral to continue their investigation.

The victim remains hospitalized in serious condition.
