Police: 7-Eleven clerk shoots armed suspect during attempted robbery

- Police say a suspect was shot by a store clerk during an attempted robbery at a Gilbert 7-Eleven.

Gilbert police say the incident happened on November 15 at 2:50 p.m. at a 7-Eleven near Cooper and Elliot Roads when the suspect, identified as 27-year-old E'lon Hayes, entered the convenience store, pointed a handgun at the clerk, and demanded money.

Police say the clerk was also armed with a handgun and drew his weapon to defend himself. Hayes then ran outside the store and made another threatening gesture towards the clerk, who followed behind him.

The store clerk then shot Hayes, who was still able to run from the scene. Officers found Hayes in a nearby neighborhood and he was transported to a nearby hospital.

Upon his release from the hospital, police say Hayes will be charged with armed robbery.
