Buckeye police: Man killed in exchange of gunfire with officers

BUCKEYE, Ariz. (FOX 10) -- Buckeye police say a man is dead following an exchange of gunfire with officers who responded to a call about a fight between a woman and her boyfriend on Christmas Day.

According to Donna Rossi with the Buckeye Police Department, officers received a 911 call shortly after 5:30 p.m. about a fight between a woman and her boyfriend near 241st Avenue and Yuma Road.

While officers were responding, 911 dispatchers heard what was believed to be a gunshot. When officers arrived at the scene, they were able to get the girlfriend out of the home, but another adult woman, along with two children, were in the home with the boyfriend.

Police officials say while the boyfriend was on the phone with officers, he threatened to take his own life.

Per the police report, "A shot was heard from inside the home and then a short time later the suspect came out of the house and opened fire on officers, forcing three of them to return fire."

SWAT team members were called to the scene and tactically moved toward the suspect, who was found lying on the driveway of the home. The suspect, identified as Antonio A. Ramos, 34, was declared dead at the scene.

"The initial investigation revealed Ramos was armed with at least four weapons, three semi-automatic handguns and one high-powered automatic rifle. It is estimated he fired more than two dozen rounds at officers, many of the bullets striking the home across the street, which thankfully, was unoccupied," stated Rossi.

No officers were injured.

The three police officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which police say is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
