Police: Bank robbery suspect took his own life during barricade situation

MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities say a man who robbed a Chandler bank near Warner and Alma School is dead after fatally shooting himself when cornered by police at a parking lot about two miles away.

Chandler police Detective Seth Tyler says authorities were able to obtain a description of the vehicle of the man who robbed the bank Friday morning and an officer spotted it parked at a gas station in neighboring Mesa near Country Club and Guadalupe.

Tyler says officers then made contact with the man and negotiated with him for at least several minutes before the man got back in his car and fatally shot himself.

Tyler says the man didn't shoot at police and police didn't shoot at the man and that nobody else was injured. The man's identity wasn't released.
