Man dead after allegedly assaulting parents at senior living community

Scottsdale police say a man is dead after he allegedly attacked his mother and father at a senior living facility.

Police say the incident happened at the Andara Senior Living Community near Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Via Linda. The suspect has been identified as 55-year-old Lee Edward Knowlton. According to Sgt. Ben Hoster, the incident began at around 7:00 p.m. Monday.

"A female caller said that their adult son was assaulting her and her husband," said Sgt. Hoster.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the mother badly beaten and outside of her apartment. Upon entering the residence, officers found her husband and son on the ground covered in blood. As Knowlton was being handcuffed, he stopped breathing and was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died.

"Drug paraphernalia was found on him, so there's a good possibility that some drug influence or something of that sort had part in this incident," said Sgt. Hoster.

Knowlton's parents, both in their 80s, are recovering.

The motive for the attack is still under investigation.

NOTE: On Tuesday evening, Phoenix Fire officials issued a correction, identifying the suspect as Lee Edward Knowlton. The suspect was incorrectly identified by officials earlier in the day.

The story has been updated to reflect the correction.
