MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- A 60-year-old Mesa man told police he fatally stabbed his wife and then himself because they'd decided to end their lives due to financial troubles.
David Vipond was booked into a Maricopa County jail Monday on suspicion of first-degree murder after being released from a hospital where he was treated for self-inflicted stab wounds.
A police statement released Thursday says 61-year-old Elizabeth Vipond had 11 stab wounds to her chest and stomach and that blood-stained knives and an ice pick were found on nightstands next to her bed.
The statement says David Vipond had wounds to his chest and abdomen and that he called 911 on Dec. 27 to report his wife's death.
Online court records don't list a defense attorney who could comment on behalf of Vipond.
