Police: Resident shot and killed intruder in Chandler

It was a frightening scene near the Coronado Street and Chandler Boulevard as authorities say a man called police, claiming he had just shot an intruder.

Chandler Police are still gathering all the details, but say it happened in a rather safe neighborhood -- a gated community.

Residents in the area woke up to a startling scene -- police all around their neighborhood, investigating a homicide. When officers arrived, they say they found a man shot to death.

At the San Cervantes luxury apartment complex, police spent the day gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses after a resident called 9-1-1 around 8:00 a.m. saying he just shot an intruder.

"I was shocked. I was honestly shocked," said Diana Dove, a neighbor.

Dove says the area is safe and she's heard of no problems with break-ins.

"Actually, police came to ask.. said we didn't hear anything, we didn't see anything.. honestly, very quiet night."

Police say the resident who shot the man is cooperating with them. Detectives are still investigating what led to the deadly shooting and if it's justified.

"If someone enters your home, your residence.. and you feel your life is in danger, someone else's life is in danger.. you have the right to use deadly force," explained Detective Seth Tyler.

There is a walkway along the side of the apartments, but police just don't know how the man got inside the complex. They are still investigating the circumstances of the shooting and whether or not the alleged intruder had a weapon.

The names of the shooter and alleged intruder have not been released.
