Police: Tempe carjacking stop leads to officer-involved shooting with suspect in south Phoenix

- UPDATE: Phoenix Police have identified the suspect in custody as 28-year-old Christopher Garcia.


Phoenix Police have a suspect in custody after an officer-involved shooting near 7th Street and Broadway on Saturday morning.

This originally started when Tempe Police were attempting to stop a carjacking suspect in Tempe.

Police said an armed suspect had carjacked a victim's vehicle, and had also struck the victim as he fled. The victim was a female adult who sustained minor injuries.

Tempe Police notified Phoenix Police that the suspect was heading toward Phoenix's jurisdiction. Officers then located the suspect at 16th Street and Southern.

Garcia, was pursued northbound from the area until the suspect collided with a civilian’s car under the I-17 at North 7th Street. Garcia then attempted to rob two other victims of their vehicles at gunpoint. As officers began to arrive Garcia pointed his handgun and/or fired at several of them. 

Garcia did take a black SUV at gunpoint and fled the area.

At 4th Street and Riverside Street, Garcia bailed out of the SUV and entered a Volvo. The Volvo was driven by an acquaintance.

The driver drove to the 7th Street and Broadway location where Garcia ran out of the Volvo and into the residence while pointing his handgun.

The occupants of the vehicle were detained and contact with Garcia was made via cell phoenix. He ventually excited the house and police took him into custody.

There are no reported injuries to officers.
