Glendale Police investigating deadly officer involved shooting in Phoenix

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -- Glendale Police officials say a suspect is dead, following a shooting involving Phoenix Police officers in Glendale.

According to Glendale Police Officer Tiffany Smith, Phoenix Police officers responded to an armed robbery at around 2:40 p.m., in the area of 32nd Street and Thomas Road. The male suspect was wanted in a number of other armed robberies, as well as a carjacking, over the course of the past week.

At around 3:40 p.m., Glendale Police officials responded to an area near the 6400 block of N. 64th Drive, where an incident described by Glendale Police officials as a "lethal force encounter" occurred.

"Cops zoomed in, the guy jumped out the car," said witness Teresa Cordova. "He supposedly started firing, and then they just took off on him, like, all guns shooting at him, and they got him."

The suspect was declared dead at the scene, and no officers were injured, according to Smith.

Glendale Police officials say the West Valley police department will handle the investigation, as the incident happened within their jurisdiction. Police did not release any names in connection with the incident, due to pending next of kin notifications.

"My heart was pounding, it was scary, because I'm coming outside to walk to my car, not even realizing what was going on," said Cordova. "Within a split second, guns were just firing."

Now, kids were scared and neighbors were angry that they came face-to-face with violence.

"Parents are upset when you have cops and civilians outside. They are pretty upset," said Cordova. "Kids were right there by the gate when they started shooting, and it caused a big old scene."

Glendale Police officials said Tuesday night that new information on the incident should be made available on Wednesday.
