Questions surround death of Prescott Valley teens

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. (KSAZ) -- Two Prescott Valley teenagers were found dead over the weekend, and while police officials say they have ruled out foul play, they are waiting on toxicology results to determine what led to the sudden death of the two popular and well-liked teens.

Gunner Bundrick and Jake Morales, both 19, were local heroes in the Prescott Valley community. They are described as star high school football players, and outstanding members of the community.

"Very popular on campus, around town," said David Moran, the teens' former football coach. "They've created a lot of memories for our students and our coaches."

Moran said he and the entire community are cherishing the fond memories Bundrick and Morales left behind.

"Stars in the football field and the baseball field," said Moran. "Not only stars on field, also stars on campus with our special needs kids."

Police say the last time they were seen alive was at around 5:00 a.m. on Saturday. At around 11:00 a.m. that same day, a family member found them both dead in Bundrick's bedroom.

Sgt. Jason Kaufman with the Prescott Valley Police Department observed the teen's autopsies.

"I cannot tell you, nor the Medical Examiner can tell you what the cause of death was...but toxicology was taken from both of them, and sent to a crime lab," said Sgt. Kaufman.

While the cause of their deaths have yet to be officially determined, one possibility has the town talking, as word on campus is the two died of a fentanyl overdose. Police say that is a possibility, and that it has become a trend in the small, tight-knit town.

"Kids, young kids are dying from using substances they don't even know what they are," said Sgt. Kaufman. "These kids could've been professional athletes. They could've been whatever they wanted to be."

Police are hoping to get the toxicology results by next week. Meanwhile, Bundrick and Morales are scheduled to be laid to rest over the weekend.
