Search underway for man who stayed under water after 90-foot cliff jump

Officials say a man has died following a cliff jumping accident at Lake Powell.
Thursday afternoon, a 28-year-old man from Jackson, Wyoming was cliff jumping in the Coconino County portion of Face Canyon on Lake Powell, according to Gerry Blair with the Coconino County Sheriff’s Department.
Officials say the man was attempting a cliff jump of approximately 90 feet, Blair said.
Following the jump, bystanders immediately searched for the man, but he did not surface.
The National Park Service, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and Utah State Parks responded to the scene and searched the area.
The water depth is more than 150 feet, so officials dispatched a remotely operated vehicle, or ROV, to assist with the search.
The body recovery effort was unsuccessful Thursday.
Currently, a dive team continues to search using vessels, ROV specialists, and law enforcement.
Blair also says that the National Park Service and Coconino County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the accident.
