Police: Security guard's vest saves him from shooting injury

Police are investigating a shooting near 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Road where a private security guard was injured.

According to police, just after 2:00 a.m. on Friday, they were called to the scene. According to Sgt. Scott Waite, the incident occurred when the guard contacted a man who was acting suspiciously in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

"A private security guard working at the complex had contacted a suspect near the Southeast portion of the apartments.  A confrontation ensured during which time the suspect fired a handgun at the security guard.   The security guard was struck by the gunshot, but was wearing a ballistic vest which caught the round," stated Detective Joe Dziawura.

Officers established a perimeter in the area in an attempt to find the suspect, but he is still outstanding.

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 25 years old, 5’9’’ tall, 200 pounds, with a mustache, wearing black clothing and a red doo-rag," added Dziawura.
