Senator Flake spreads message of peace at Islamic Center

It's been nine days since a couple opened fire at a holiday gathering in San Bernardino, California, killing 14 people.

On Friday, Arizona Senator Jeff Flake tried to help with the healing process by attending a valley mosque and speaking to the congregation.

Senator Flake said he had never been to religious services at a mosque before. His first-ever visit to the Islamic Center of the North East Valley came on the heels of Donald Trump's comment that all Muslims should temporarily be banned from the U.S.

"I think all of us.. we're surprised at the statement that was made and the position and policy he adopted.. it does not reflect well on the Republican party," said Flake.

But Trump backers we spoke to this week after he made his comment about Muslims say they're not bigots and they sincerely believe the Republican front-runner has a point.

"He just says what he feels and he doesn't care. It is kind of good, some things he says are a little erratic," said Larry Clifford of Phoenix.

Although Trump is leading the polls, Flake is not buying his candidacy.

"I think Republicans are smart and will come around. I don't think Donald Trump will be our nominee and I am grateful for that."

Our question to Senator Flake: Precisely how and why will Trump voters change their minds? On that one, we got no answer.

Earlier this week, we reported that Trump is coming to the valley. Now we have the details. According to DonaldJTrump.com, he will hold a rally at 12:00 p.m. December 16th at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. People can being showing up to the event at 10:00 a.m.

You might remember the GOP front-runner was in the valley back in July.
