Son of actor Jean-Claude Van Damme arrested in Tempe, accused of assault

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 21-year-old son of actor Jean-Claude Van Damme is accused of holding his roommate at knifepoint at their apartment in suburban Phoenix.

According to the Tempe Police Department, Nicolas Francois Van Varenberg, was involved in a disturbance in the area of E. Veterans Way and College Avenue after punching the side of an elevator, causing an injury to his hand.

"There was a blood trail that led back to Nicolas' apartment where Tempe PD conducted a welfare check and spoke with Nicholas and roommate. After Tempe PD left, Nicholas confronted his roommate about answering the door for police," stated TPD's Ron Elcock.

Officers were able to contact the roommate about 20 minutes later. "He advised Nicholas held him at knife point and refused to allow him to leave the apartment. A search warrant was executed where the knife, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were seized," added Elcock.

Van Varenberg was arrested and booked into the Tempe City Jail. He faces aggravated assault with deadly weapons, unlawful imprisonment, assault - cause fear of injury, disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia charges.

Van Varenberg didn't have a lawyer at his initial court appearance where bond was set at $10,000. He was later released from jail after posting bond. He was ordered to keep away from the apartment and find a new place to live while he awaits his court date.

Van Varenberg is the youngest son of Van Damme, who is known for his martial arts action films of the 1980s and 1990s.
