Southwest Key employee accused of sexually abusing 14-year-old

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Police say a Southwest Key employee was arrested and is accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old.

According to Sgt. Vince Lewis with the Phoenix Police Department, 32-year-old Fernando Magaz Negrete, an employee at a Southwest Key facility located near 27th Avenue and Campbell Avenue, was arrested after a witness said he inappropriately touched a 14-year-old on July 25.

The incident reportedly happened on June 27, just one day before Melania Trump visited the facility. According to officials, surveillance video from that night shows Negrete approaching the victim's room several times, but the doorway and bedroom were out of view.

On July 31, Phoenix police questioned Negrete about the incident and he was arrested.

Negrete faces charges of molestation, aggravated assault and sexual abuse.

Southwest Key is a facility where migrant children are being held. Alessandra Soler with the ACLU of Arizona now wants answers.

"Did the government know about this? Has there been a history of abuse at the shelter?" asked Soler. "These kids are particularly vulnerable. I mean, they're migrant children. many of them traveled alone. Many of them are fleeing violence and poverty in their home countries."
