Storm pummels Phoenix area; west side hardest hit

- Wind from a powerful storm damaged buildings and knocked down trees and utility poles as a low-pressure system moved through the Phoenix area.

Damage from the storm late Sunday appeared to be heaviest on the metro area's near west side. It included heavy damage to cotton warehouses, including some which lost their roofs, and a gas station's carport-style roof that was knocked over.

At the Calcot warehouse facility near 51st Avenue and Missouri, there were more than 30 buildings on the property and now half of those buildings are gone.  Some of the structures were made of wood and others steel, but they were no match for the powerful storm.

FOX 10's Andrew Hasbun talked to the people that run the facility and they say cleanup will be a massive task and they don't know where to begin.

"Jaw dropping.. I'm just shocked.  I could not believe that all these warehouses were all gone. They're just gone. We got a 10-man crew.. seven of us in the front office. We had to send the crews home. There's nothing for them to do until we get insurance here," said Reggie, an assistant superintendent, who has been with the company for 34 years.

More than 22,000 utility customers lost power Sunday evening. Crews worked overnight to repair damage and the number of customers still without power by mid-morning Monday dropped to fewer than 800.

The American Red Cross said downed trees damaged roofs of at least three apartment complexes, displacing several family from one of the complexes.

No injuries were reported.
