Students show support for LGBT classmates at Independence High School

GLENDALE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Yesterday, students leaving Independence High School were met by demonstrators, who were protesting against gays.

So to fight back, some students at the school are showing up in rainbow-colored attire.

"Why are you wearing a rainbow hat today?" Fox 10's Courtney Griffin asked.

"Because I want to support myself and all my gay friends, and lesbian, gay and bi," Luis Carbhal said.

Luis is a freshman at Independence High School and he was upset when he saw anti-gay protestors outside his school, while students are mourning.

"Like, I got so mad, so I started screaming," he said.

So today, many other students like Luis are showing support for the LGBT community by wearing rainbow colors.

"It's turning into, like a war, because he said, the guy who was there said I was a sin and I think he came over here because two girls lost their lives were lesbian," Luis said.

Students are now coming together to not only remember the two sophomores who died in the murder-suicide last week, but also to support their LGBT classmates.

"God loves us, so he forgives us the way we are," Luis said.

"So by wearing what you're wearing today, what are you and your friends hoping to show?" Fox 10's Courtney Griffin asked.

"Yes, to show him that we are proud to be who we are and he's not going to change who we are," Luis said.

School officials say they're not sure if more anti-gay protestors will show up today, but if they do, the school is staffed appropriately.
